Quote of the Day - 2/27/09

Accountability

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up . . . Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

-- Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12

Let this serve as a reminder to us this weekend.

Thursday Morning

The Bisons had an intense 5:45 AM workout this morning. Many responded well to the challenges presented by Coach Huck on Tuesday, and thus the workout was a good one. Chaz Rogers (RS Freshman, QB, Guntersville, AL) continues to impress, as does Robert Carson (Sophomore, Receiver, Milton, FL), Cade Caton (Senior, Receiver, Garfield, AR), and LJ Tarrant (RS Freshman, OL, Cabot, AR).

We'll be back in the weight room tomorrow at various times for our last lift of the week.

Courage

Courage doesn’t always soar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, “I will try again tomorrow.”

Sportsmanship

It's nice to see that sportsmanship is not dead.

For the Milwaukee Madison Knights, fired up to host its arch rival from DeKalb, Ill., this would be no ordinary game. "It's kind of like an Illinois-Wisconsin type of rivalry. Packers-Bears," said Aaron Womack Jr., head coach of the Knights. But the night of the big game, Madison's co-captain --18-year-old senior Johntell Franklin -- was missing. His mother, who was suffering from cancer, had taken a sudden turn that Saturday, Feb. 7. At the hospital, Franklin was by his mother's side as she died. Read on . . .

Details

A mountain is composed of tiny grains of earth. The ocean is made up of tiny drops of water. Even so, life is but an endless series of little details, actions, speeches, and thoughts. And the consequences, whether good or bad, of even the least of them are far-reaching.

Tuesday AM

The Bisons were up and at it at 5:45 this morning. We had our usual morning workout, plus an added session of Coach Huck's notorious cone-drill so that we could focus on finishing, and paying attention to details. It was a good morning in that we had the chance to use what God has given us: the ability to work hard and discipline ourselves.

We will be back in the weight room tomorrow afternoon.

Monday Update

Tons of weight lifted today. Quite a few guys set new personal bests, with several new additions added to the goal board for bench and hang clean. More specific numbers later.

5:45 AM will be here before you know it. ;-)

Monday

The Bisons will be back in the weight room Monday lifting in two groups (3:05 and 4:30). We will test on bench and hang clean and see how far we have come in the last few weeks. Many guys have already demonstrated significant gains thus far this spring. Our goal board for bench press is well over half way there, and the hang clean goal board isn't far behind.

Tomorrow morning we will be up bright and early for a 5:45 AM workout on the turf.

Keenan Kitchen

Keenan Kitchen (Senior, DT, Niagara Falls, NY) squatted 600 lbs. for six reps this morning at the 6:00 AM workout. That's a lot of weight, especially that early in the morning. Great work, Kitch!

Friday

The Bisons return to the weight room Friday for a lift. In Coach Beason's words: Be prepared to squat your brains out!

Have a great weekend, and hold one another accountable.

HU Day of Service

Wednesday

The Bisons will be back in the weight room today for an afternoon lift. The first group will begin at 3:05, and the second group at 4:30. We have been setting a lot of personal records in bench and hang clean the last few days, and hopefully that will continue today.

Ten Bisons are preparing for another spring break trip to NY to assist with the Timothy Hill Children's Ranch. Please remember us in your prayers as we get ready to head north for a week. It should be a great time.

Conditioning

2/17/09

Due to inclement weather the Bisons moved conditioning from 5:45 am. to 4:00 p.m. Yesterday's conditioning really tested they guys. They started off stretching across the field in 17 groups, and eventually worked into their position groups doing 10 yard explosion starts. It was awesome watching they guys compete against each other. Then they broke off into groups for conditioning. They rotated around the field between 7 stations all working speed, agility, running form concentrating on their fast twitch muscles, and doing it at a very intense pace. The day ended in a grueling ab session featuring extra bicycles and more bicycles. The big guys really battled through it!

Lifting

2/16/09

"If today's lift was going to determine how next season plays out, how hard are you going to bust it to get the Bisons to the next level?" - Coach Simmons

Today the Bisons were in the weight room for an intense lift. The first group had a great lift and several of the guys improved their personal bests. Teddy Luke climbed into the 350 bench press category after benching 362 pounds. Junior College transfer Evan Wynne benched his way into the 300 category doing 312 pounds. Keenan Kitchen ended the lift with a new Bison record after squatting 638 pounds.

The second group followed with the same intensity and energy as the first group. Jeremy Townsend increased his bench to 319 pounds. Freshmen Travis Davis set a new personal best benching 375 pounds 7 times for a 440+ max. Junior College transfer and defensive lineman Mark Gutierrez rounded out the day climbing into 350 category of our goal board with a hang clean of 354.
